Year 11 success IN THIS YEAR’S GCSE, BTEC, CAMBRIDGE NATIONAL AND VCERT RESULTS
Year 11 students and staff are celebrating success as students receive their GCSE, BTEC, Cambridge National and VCert results. In common with all schools nationally, results are based on teacher-assessed grades in lieu of students sitting examinations in the summer.
These results will enable students to progress on to a wide range of post-16 courses, providing a solid foundation for success at Regent Sixth Form or elsewhere as they begin their study of A Level, BTEC National and Cambridge Technical courses.
Outstanding individual performances include:
Saira Begum, who joined Regent High School from Edith Neville Primary School, achieved an incredible eight grade 9s in Biology, Business Studies, English Language, English Literature, Geography, Mathematics, Physics and Sociology and three grade 8s. Saira is this year’s highest achieving student. Saira talked about how she ‘fell in love with Geography’, with that being down to ‘teachers and the general support I have received’. Saira said that Regent High School has ‘helped her to grow as a person’. Saira will be taking A Levels in Biology, Chemistry, Geography and Mathematics, with a view to studying Medicine at Oxford or Cambridge.
Fiona Pacolli, who also went to Edith Neville Primary School when she was younger, achieved five grade 9s in Chemistry, Computing, Drama, English Literature and Geography, four grade 8s and one grade 7. Fiona said that the teachers at Regent High School ‘offered immense support’ and that they demonstrated ‘dedication and effort’. Fiona advised younger students to ‘revise from the beginning and try to stay on top of things’. Fiona is intending to study English Literature, Geography, Mathematics and Politics at A Level, with a view to reading Law at Oxford or Cambridge when she is older.
Mustapha Blain, who joined Regent High School in Year 9 having previously lived in Saudi Arabia, achieved five grade 9s in English Language and English Literature, History, Physics and Sociology, four grade 8s and one grade 5. Mustapha is this year’s highest achieving boy. Mustapha explained that his ‘teachers were really good’ and ‘really capable at their subjects’. He suggested younger students start their revision early so that they can avoid stress. Mustapha will be studying A Level Economics, History and Mathematics next year, hoping then to progress on to Oxford to study Economics.
Jude Morgan, who previously attended Holy Trinity and St Silas C of E Primary School, achieved four grade 9s in English Language, English Literature, Mathematics and Media Studies, five grade 8s, and two grade 7s. Jude will be continuing his learning in Further Mathematics, History, Mathematics and Physics with a view to then progressing on to a mathematics or science-related course at university. Jude said that the teachers at Regent High School are ‘really inspiring and keen’, and that he has ‘become a better student because of the methods I was taught’. Jude praised the teaching staff, leaders, resources and facilities at Regent High School.
Maryam Abdul, a former Netley Primary School pupil, achieved four grade 9s in Business Studies, Chemistry, Computing and Mathematics, four grade 8s, two grade 7s and one grade 6. Maryam will continue her study of Economics, Mathematics, Politics and Psychology next year. Maryam said that the ‘students at Regent High School are very welcoming and treat you like your own family’, and that staff will ‘fight for you to achieve your best’. Maryam said that younger students should ‘start studying and working hard from day one!’
Labiba Ahmed, who was a pupil at Edith Neville for primary school, achieved four grade 9s in Business Studies, History, and Science (Combined), three grade 8s, one grade 7 and one grade 5. Labiba said that Regent High School has a ‘very supportive atmosphere with good facilities and teachers’. She said the school is ‘friendly’. Labiba intends to study History, Psychology and Sociology next year, before undertaking a degree in Nursing.
Elias Zemry, who attended Fairholme Primary School, achieved three grade 9s in English Language, Geography and Mathematics, five grade 8s, one grade 7 and a grade 4. Elias will be studying Geography, Further Mathematics, Mathematics and Physics next year. Elias said that his teachers ‘provided really good assessment preparation’, and that Regent High School is a ‘place where someone can fulfil their potential’. He suggested that students ‘start their revision early!’
Malina Mielczarek was a pupil at Whitehall Primary School and was awarded three grade 9s in English Language, Geography and Sociology, as well as four grade 8s, one grade 7 and two grade 6s. Malina mentioned that her tutor helped her to achieve so highly, as well as taking and revising with other students, as you ‘push each other further’. Malina advised younger students to ‘aim as high as you can; try your hardest and achieve what’s made for you’. Malina will be studying A Level English Literature, Geography and Politics next year, before setting her sights on reading Law at Cambridge.
Fatima Ahmed, who attended Edith Neville Primary School, was awarded three grade 9s in Business Studies, History and Sociology, four grade 8s, two grade 7s and one grade 5. Fatima said that the ‘tutor staff are amazing and encouraging; they are always here to talk to’ and advised students to ‘revise but take breaks’ as well as trying ‘different revision techniques’. Fatima will continue her study of Biology, Chemistry and History, with a view to then studying Medicine at UCL.
Faiza Khan, also previously of Edith Neville Primary School, achieved three grade 9s in Art, Geography and Science (Combined), five grade 8s and two grade 6s. Faiza spoke about the importance of the transition process from primary to secondary school, and how the ‘teachers support and push students’. Faiza told younger students to have ‘a positive mindset and enjoy learning; don’t stress!’ Faiza is planning to study English Literature, Geography and Psychology next year, and hopes to read Forensic Psychology or Educational Psychology at UCL.
Faiza was joined on results day by her mother, Rahima Begum, who said ‘transition provided a strong foundation for students’, and as a parent she has ‘had support and knew who to approach when needed, especially during lockdown’. Rahima noted the support of Faiza’s father, who has developed a love in Faiza of the Bengali language, as well as ‘great team from the Headteacher down’ at Regent High School.
Lucjano Kumanaku, who attended Tufnell Park Primary School, achieved three grade 9s also, in Business Studies, Computing and Science (Combined), alongside two grade 8s, one grade 7, two grade 6s and one grade 4. Lucjano explained that he received ‘lots of support from teachers’, and appreciated ‘the way he was taught and the structure of lessons’. Lucjano said that ‘teachers really support you’, and that younger students should ‘work hard!’ Lucjano will be studying Economics, Geography and Mathematics next year.
Over 30 grade 9s – the highest grade possible in the current GCSE grading system – were awarded to Regent High School students in subjects including Art, Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, Citizenship, Computing, Drama, English Language, English Literature, Geography, History, Mathematics, Media Studies, Physics, Science (Combined), Sociology and Spanish. One A* was awarded to a VCert Child Development and Care student, and two D* grades were awarded for the Cambridge National Certificate in ICT.
Gary Moore, Headteacher of Regent High School, said: ‘Our Year 11 students have performed outstandingly well this year despite having their GCSE studies disrupted in Years 10 and 11. We are hugely proud of our students and the grades they have achieved, which illustrates the endurance, tenacity and stamina demonstrated by them. We congratulate each of our Year 11 students, and wish them well for successful and happy futures.
‘It must also be remembered that these achievements are not attained in isolation; our students have received excellent teaching and support during their time at Regent High School, and have kind and caring families who have provided encouragement, strength and care during the last two years.
